Northern British Columbia Hot Springs
Liard River Hot Springs, Tourism BC photo
Northern BC hot springs are often set in remote wilderness areas. Soak in the nearly tropical thermal springs of Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park. Or dip into the natural, sea-side pools of Gandll K'in Gwaayaay (Hot Spring Island) in Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, and Haida Heritage Site on Haida Gwaii.
Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park
Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park, located on the Alaska Highway, contains one of Canada's largest natural hot springs systems. These springs have created an unusually warm microclimate: tropical, exotic plants (including 14 species of orchids) flourish here. Follow the boardwalk to a rustic pool. Year-round, temperatures range from 42°C to 52°C (107°F to 125°F). For a special retreat, visit the hot springs in winter and relax in the steaming pool as the snow covers the trees and marshland.
Gandll K'in Gwaayaay (Hot Spring Island)
At Gandll K'in Gwaayayy (Hot Spring Island), soak in one of three pools while taking in spectacular views of the ocean and mountains. The largest pool is surrounded by salal bushes and crabapple trees, while the second sits cliffside and the third is just steps from the ocean. Access to the hot springs is by boat or aircraft. (Note: there are no roads, no maintained hiking trails and limited visitor facilities, and visitors require permission from the Haida Watchmen to set foot on the island.)
