Calling all artists the 6x6 Auction is back, this year with a theme, "Song Titles"! The 6x6 Auction is a fun community art exhibition and silent auction fundraiser. Everyone in the community is invited to take part - simply create a 6"x6"-sized work of art inspired by a song title, using any art medium or style. All the artwork will be exhibited at the Smithers Art Gallery for four days, October 21-24, with bidding by silent auction. Bidding ends at a Wine & Cheese Event on Friday October 24, 7.00pm-9.30pm. Blank 6"x6" panels are available now at the Gallery for just $3, or you can make your own out of any material. Deadline for submission of artwork: Wednesday October 15, 2014. 250-847-3898.

See the Canadian West through the sketches and paintings of Robert David Symons. He was an artist, writer and naturalist. Born in England in 1898, he was the son of prominent artist. Symons immigrated to Canada in 1914, at the age of 16, to be a cowboy on a ranch in Saskatchewan. After serving in the First World War, he returned to the Canadian west. He lived near Fort St. John from 1943 to 1961 first as a game warden and then as a rancher. He painted, worked with horses, wrote books, and was an advocate for conserving nature. This exhibition was curated by Heather Smith of the Moose Jaw Museum & Art Gallery.

This annual event kicks off with the Lighting of the Christmas Trees at the Court House on Friday evening.

Local choirs & musicians sing carols while everyone munches on cookies & candy canes, washed down with hot chocolate, all supplied free by local sponsors.

Saturday's a special day for the children, starting with a traditional pancake breakfast with Santa & followed by the downtown Santa Parade.

Saturday evening's Sailpast sees festively decorated commercial & pleasure boats parading their vessels up & down the harbour playing Christmas music.

Hot chocolate, apple cider & cookies are free in keeping with the spirit of the season.
