Hiking terrain in the Nimpo Lake area ranges from glaciated summits to rolling grasslands, wetlands to river valleys, and dry alpine forests.
Trails and routes are suited to different levels of fitness and hiking experience, and guided hiking tours are available.
Day Hiking
Perkins Peak is an easy two-hour hike accessible from a 30km/19mi road off Highway 20, east of Nimpo Lake. Upon reaching the peak, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of the Monarch Icecap, the Klinaklini Icefield, and the Pantheon, Mount Waddington and Niut ranges.
The Pantheon Trail System has 11 trails that pass through various protected regions, including the northwest corner of the Elegesi Qiyus Wild Horse Preserve (pronounced "ah-legacy cayuse," meaning "Eagle Lake Henry Cayuse Wild Horse Preserve"). The trail system is best accessed by foot or on horseback.

The Niut Trail System has seven major trails east of the Pantheon Trail system, which extend well into the horse preserve. The trails meander through glacier fields, beside stunning, crystal clear river-fed lakes, with views of rugged Coastal Mountains and old growth forest in the distance.
Guided Hiking
Rainbow Mountain Outfitters provide guided wilderness hiking. Hikers carry light daypacks, while horses take care of heavy gear on these multi-day hiking/camping trips. Nuk Tessli Alpine Experience offers guided birdwatching and hiking in the alpine areas south west of Nimpo Lake. Nature Trails Canada based out of the Terra Nostra Guest Ranch, features heli-hiking.
Practical points
- Nimpo Lake's backcountry is bear country: Maintain a safe distance from bears and other wildlife, store food in proper containers, and pack out all waste.
- Be prepared for quickly changing weather and wind conditions.
- Do not hike alone in backcountry areas.
- Make someone aware of planned hiking routes.
- Use mosquito repellent when hiking between May and early-August.
