For an authentic taste of Canadian sports culture, New Westminster is well worth visiting.
The New Westminster Salmonbellies are the winningest team in the history of Canadian lacrosse, the nation's official summer sport, with 24 Mann Cup titles as of 2008. That golden trophy is kept at the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in New Westminster (302 Royal Ave.). Between May and August, watch the Salmonbellies play against their Western Lacrosse Association rivals at the 3,500-seat Queen's Park Arena (1st St. and Third Ave.).
High school football is another big draw in this city. The New Westminster Hyacks, coached by TSN sports anchor Farhan Lalji, lure crowds to Mercer Stadium (835 8th St.) every fall.
There's a long-standing sporting tradition in New Westminster.
