Consistent snow conditions, abundant sunshine, and diverse terrain make the Kootenay Rockies regions an ideal location for dogsledding.

The "Wilderness Classic Sled Dog Derby & Festival" is held annually in Elkford, and features both dogsledding and skijoring (a individual on skis is pulled by a dog).

Dogsledding tour packages are offered at Fernie Alpine Resort in the Kootenay Rockies region. Fernie offers a number dogsledding options. Sledders can ride individually or as passengers on 45min to half-day tours. Tour guides provide local history and knowledge of the Elk Valley and surrounding area.
