Klemtu Fishing
Fishing, Tourism BC/JF Bergeron photo
Klemtu, located on Swindle Island, 228km/141mi northwest of Bella Coola, has excellent fishing and amenities such as a public dock and fueling station to accommodate visiting anglers. The best fishing spots are usually excellent for wildlife viewing as well.
Guided fishing tours are available with several operators in surrounding communities of Denny Island, Hakai Pass, Ocean Falls, and Bella Coola.
Fish Species
Three species of salmon – chum, coho, and pink – spawn in the area's many coastal rivers and creeks. Chum are the last to spawn in the rivers and streams, and coho feast on kilometres/miles of kelp reefs located along the coastline, start late in July and continuing through September. Other potential catches include halibut (in Laredo Sound northwest of Swindle Island), lingcod, rockfish, and snapper. Herring, crab, prawns, urchins, and sea cucumbers are also harvested locally.

Practical Points
- Klemtu is located in a temperate rainforest, which sees a lot of rain. Visitors are advised to bring rain gear and gumboots. It is also important to carry wet weather camping equipment.
- Due to the steep topography of the coastline landing boats on shore is difficult and there are only a few campsite areas. Contact the Tourism Office for information on approved campsites in the area.
- Shellfish contamination can be a concern at certain times during the year. Check with the Tourism Office for more information.
- All anglers age 16 plus, resident and non-resident, require a license to fish. Licenses are available on the BC government website.
