Kicking Horse Mountain Resort offers a huge range of on-mountain activities, and there's still more on offer down in the valley.
Spend an hour at the Tube Zone near the base. It's fun for kids and grown-ups – especially Disco Tubing on Saturday nights. Grab a pair of blades and head over to the outdoor skating rink, right in the middle of the village. There's a firepit and warming hut on site.
Stay above the powder on a pair of snowshoes. Two and four kilometre snowshoe trails are located off the Palliser Trail road. Rentals are available in the village.
Snowmobiling
Go snowmobiling with one of three snowmobile operators in the Golden area. Both independent rentals and guided tours are available, and the trails are second to none.
Cross-Country & Backcountry Skiing
Get some aerobic exercise at the Dawn Mountain Nordic Centre, just a few minutes walk from the Day Lodge. Rentals are available at the resort. Take a few days to get beyond the confines of the valley – the Golden area is renowned for its backcountry lodges, heli-skiing and cat-skiing.
Indoor Rock Climbing
Climb the walls at the Dogtooth Climbing Gym, just 10 minutes from Kicking Horse resort.
Summer Activities
Mountain Biking & Hiking
Lift-serviced mountain biking begins at the summit of Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, and runs from June to September. Or have lunch at the Eagle's Eye Restaurant and walk off the calories with a hike along the ridge.
Wildlife Viewing
For one amazing wildlife viewing experience, see a grizzly bear in the Grizzly Bear Refuge at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. For another, visit the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Centre. Watch for wolf signs and turn off the TransCanada Highway approximately 10km/6mi west of Golden.
Festivals & Special Events
Kicking Horse hosts a number of fun events, including:
- Wrangle the Chute: Try one of the more unusual triathlon events on the calendar. It involves freeride, a terrain park jump and (with a truly Albertan twist) bronco riding. What do those special events types put in their coffee? Wrangle the Chute goes in mid-March.
- Dogtooth Dash: An annual ski mountaineering race like no other. Ski, skin and hike around four alpine bowls. Enter the competetive course or have some fun in the more casual poker run.
- Sun Splash Funk Festival: The season wraps up in early April with the Sun Splash Funk Festival, which features old-school ski wear, dummy downhill, slush cup and live music.
