Wineries & Vineyards
Grapes on a vine (Andrea Johnson photo)
Kelowna is the birthplace of BC wine.
Kelowna (and its surrounding area) features three separate winemaking regions, currently with 25 wineries.
Most wineries are open year round for tasting and tours, while some are seasonal or by appointment. In Kelowna's winemaking regions, expect to find solid table wines and internationally-recognized distinctive reds, whites, rosés, sparkling wines, and icewines.
Look for the aromas and flavours of the Okanagan: herbal – sage, clover, honey and elderflower; tree fruit – apple, pear, peach and apricot; red fruit – plum, cherry, raspberry and blackberry; and earthy – stone, gravel, mineral and dust. Finally, pair a vintage with locally-sourced dishes at a winery restaurant, or with artisan chesses on an impromptu winery picnic.

Kelowna Wines
Kelowna wineries take advantage of the favourable aspect of the ridges that rim the city. Vineyards are planted for maximum sun exposure, a location which also translates into amazing views of the Okanagan Lake below. Notable vineyards and wineries in this area include Tantalus Vineyards, CedarCreek Estate Winery, St. Hubertus Estate Winery, and Summerhill Pyramid Winery, best known for its award-winning sparkling wines aged in a miniature duplicate of Egypt's Pyramid of Cheops. In downtown Kelowna, visit the winery and tasting room of Calona Vineyards, and in East Kelowna, try House of Rose Winery.
Mount Boucherie Wines
On the slopes of Mount Boucherie, an extinct volcano in West Kelowna (13.6km/8.5mi from Kelowna), vineyards produce wines uniquely flavoured by rich volcanic soil. Mission Hill Family Estate overlooks Okanagan Lake, while the vineyards of Quails' Gate Estate Winery slope down towards its shoreline. Mount Boucherie Estate Winery, Beaumont Vineyards, Rollingdale Winery, and Little Straw Vineyards Estate Winery also share Mount Boucherie. Kalala Organic Estate Winery is located on the benchland above West Kelowna.
Lake Country Wines
The community of Lake Country, 30km/18.6mi north of Kelowna, hosts its own vineyards on the sunny west-facing slopes rising from the shoreline of Okanagan Lake. Gray Monk Estate Winery pioneered the cultivation of vinifera varietals (winemaking grapes native to the Mediterranean, central Europe, and southwestern Asia) in the Okanagan, making premium wines since 1972. Also visit nearby Arrowleaf Cellars.
Kelowna Wine Culture
Learn about the history of local winemaking at the BC Wine Museum & VQA Shop, or check out a variety of wine-oriented events, such as tastings, winemaster's dinners, lectures, and festivals. Okanagan Wine Festivals include the Spring Wine Festival, the Summer Wine Festival, the Fall Wine Festival, and the Icewine Festival.
Drop by the Kelowna Visitor Centre for winery brochures, touring maps, and information on Okanagan Wine Festivals.
