Skiing & Snowboarding
Skiing (Canadian Tourism Commission photo)
Invermere locals are absolutely spoiled when it comes to skiing and snowboarding – and likely other things too.
After all, how many people can choose between two ski hills, both of which are within a 30-minute drive? Panorama Mountain Village and Fairmont Hot Springs Ski Area are the closest places to ski or snowboard from Invermere.
Panorama Mountain Village
Panorama Mountain Village Resort gets an annual dump of 479cm/188in of the white stuff, and if that's not enough, they can make snow too.
Lifts operate right out of the village, carrying skiers and boarders 1,220m/4,000ft to the top of the mountain. Below this dizzying elevation of 2,375m/7,800ft, the resort maintains an amazing 120 trails and bowls, and two terrain parks. Only 20 per cent of the mountain is suitable for beginners, with 55 per cent for intermediate/advanced skiers and boarders, and 25 per cent for experts.

Built to sleep up to 3,000 people, Panorama Mountain Village is almost as large a community as Invermere itself, and it has the facilities to support its population. There are hot pools; a spa and a resident physiotherapist to help soothe tired muscles; and restaurants and bars to nourish and entertain at the end of a day on the mountain. The resort even has its own retail shops and a grocery store.
Equipment rentals are available at the resort and can be booked with accommodation in advance of your stay.
Fairmont Hot Springs
With terrain signage that is more blue/green than black, Fairmont Hot Springs is very much a family-friendly ski destination. Enjoying a sunny, southwestern exposure, the lodge is situated at the base of the hill, at 1,280m/4,200ft. From there, a triple chair and a platter-lift service the mountain, which has about a dozen runs. Rentals and lunch are available at the lodge.
The price of a lift ticket also includes admission to the Fairmont Hot Springs pool for a welcome soak after a day on the mountain.
