Houston is famous for its freshwater fishing.
It even has Canada's largest fly fishing rod at 8m/60ft tall. While it is known as the Steelhead Capital of Canada, Houston attracts anglers looking for all types of fish, including spring and coho salmon, rainbow and cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden, burbot and char.
Morice River
One of the most popular rivers in the area is the Morice River. Some anglers have been known to travel across the world to fish in the Morice River. Many fishers camp at Buck Flats, a recreation spot about 15 minutes west of town on the edge of Morice River, for weeks during the summer and fish every day. The river is busy but long so everyone can find a spot. The best time to catch salmon and trout is during the summer, while the best time for steelhead is during the winter.

Equipment and Guides
Anglers must bring personal watercraft, as there are no rentals in town. Hiring a local fishing guide is also an option. The Visitor Centre can help with finding a guide but note that it's best to book far ahead of time – they are busy in the summer.
Most of the shore fishing is drive-in access, not walk-in, and spots range from just a few minutes drive from town to more than an hour away, depending on your destination.
Check with the Houston Visitor Centre for a complete list of fishing spots in the area. Note that all fishers 16-years-old and over, residents and non-residents, require a license to fish. Licenses are available on the BC government website.
