Wineries & Vineyards
Grapes on a vine (Andrea Johnson photo)
Contributing to the warm glow of life on this tight little island are three businesses with tasting rooms.
One specializes in cold-climate wines. Another makes mead, the so-called "nectar of the Gods." And a third is producing award-winning gin and vodka. All welcome visitors.
Island Spirits Distillery
Island Spirits Distillery specializes in small-batch ultra-premium gin and vodka. Its line of celebrated liquors – both martini-classic and infusions such as the Black Jelly Bean Sichuan Pepper vodka – are bottled under the pHROG label.
Discriminating critics like Jurgen Gothe and the sippers at Vancouver Magazine approve. The pHROG name is a tribute to the alchemical science of distilling and the frogs who chorus outside the company's wood-sided headquarters. Tours and tastings are held in July and August. (4605 Roburn Road near the Community Hall.)

Middle Mountain Mead
Lovely landscaped grounds and long-distance views from the eastern slope of Mount Geoffrey are two of the rewards for visiting Middle Mountain Mead. Steve McGrath and Helen Grond tap their on-site aviaries for honey, the prime ingredient in their line of English-style meads. Classic apple cider aged in oak barrels is a bestseller here. Other options include meads flavored with lavender, cranberries, ginger (the "Green Tea Elixir") and black currents. The wine shop and tasting room is open on summer afternoons. Visitors are invited to linger on the patio or wander around the property. (3505 Euston Road.)
Carbrea Vineyard & Winery
Hornby Island's only vineyard, the Carbrea Vineyard & Winery, was planted in 2002 on sun-drenched farmland near the Cardboard House bakery. Stephen and Suzie Bishop make small-batch, oak-aged Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Cab/Merlot, and a wild blackberry dessert wine. Medals from the Northwest Wine Summit suggest they're onto a good thing. Say hello to Buddy, the vineyard dog, then sample the wines in the attractive tasting room. Deli goodies are available here and the shady patio is a nice spot to enjoy a picnic. (1885 Central Road.)
