With hundreds of kilometres of open ocean, sandy beaches, and almost year-round waves, the surfing here is highly accessible, but it's never crowded – even on days with perfect conditions.
Bring surfing gear or rent it at North Beach Surf Shop in Masset (the only surf shop on Haida Gwaii), which offers lessons and guided experiences. Not a surfer? Try kiteboarding or stand up paddle surfing to still enjoy Haida Gwaii’s waves and beaches.
After a surf session, explore some of the other unique aspects of Haida Gwaii, such as its Aboriginal culture, outdoor activities and pristine wilderness.
Popular Haida Gwaii Surf Spots
North Beach (20 minutes east of Masset) is the most popular area to surf on Haida Gwaii. This long stretch of sandy shoreline has consistent ground swells and breaks. North Beach’s waves are suitable for beginner surfers or experienced surfers looking for a challenge, and it's easily accessible by car year-round.
East Beach and Rennell Sound (near Tlell) have less consistent waves than North Beach, but generally large wind swell in winter months (intermediate to experienced surfers only). Both are accessible by car, but winter conditions can affect roads. Check with the local surf shop in advance.
Cold Water Surfing on Haida Gwaii
October to May is the prime season for surfing on Haida Gwaii, as winter storms bring good, clean swells – and while wave conditions can be fickle, surfers won’t have to wait for long for favourable conditions. Summertime's sunnier skies and smaller waves are good for beginner surfers.
Be prepared for some of BC’s coldest waters: temperatures range from a cool 3°C/37°F in the winter to 12°C/54°F in summer. Wearing 5mm neoprene wetsuits with booties, gloves and hoods is recommended (rentals available at North Beach Surf Shop).
Surf Shop, Lessons and Accommodations
North Beach Surf Shop is Haida Gwaii’s only surf shop. Beginners can learn to surf and brush up on skills with lessons, while experienced surfers can opt for guided services to remote (and secret) surf spots. Surfing equipment rentals are available, along with guided beach activities such as stand up paddle surfing, kiteboarding, clam digging and beachcombing.
Need a place to stay? Surfers can choose from motels and hotels in town, lodges, campgrounds, or rustic, off-grid cabins right by the water – accommodations here are never far from the beach.
Haida Gwaii Expression Session
Masset’s Haida Gwaii Expression Session (November) is a friendly celebration of surfing that draws mostly locals, although past events have included professional guest surfers. Take in free surf movies, lessons and photography workshops, or paddle out in search of waves.
