Backcountry Skiing

Getting into the backcountry to ski around Golden could be a lot of work, or it could be easy.
Ride a gondola, drive a car, or sit back for a quick ride in a helicopter to unbeatable terrain and a luxurious backcountry lodge.
Golden's 'Slackcountry'
Take the gondola at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort to access the back side of the Dogtooth Range. Perhaps because access is so easy, locals refer to this area as "Slackcountry", but with features such as the tantalizingly named Super Bowl, there's nothing slack about the terrain.
Glacier National Park
Another painless way to access the backcountry is to drive to the summit of Rogers Pass, about an hour west of Golden on Highway #1. Glacier National Park, with its alpine bowls, glades and ice fields, is a backcountry skier's paradise.

Backcountry Lodges
The ultimate easy ride, however, is a helicopter flight from Golden into one of the area's many backcountry lodges. Situated in the alpine, these mountain hideaways make a perfect base for guided or independent day trips in terrain that would otherwise be inaccessible. Apres ski, guests can look forward to a delicious evening meal, perhaps a massage or a sauna, good company and a great night's sleep.
Mistaya Lodge is situated above the headwaters of Blaeberry Creek at an elevation of 2050m/6700ft. The lodge can accommodate a maximum of 14 guests, and offers guided winter and summer activities. The owners pride themselves on their low impact on the fragile alpine environment, and even provide fresh organic lettuce from their greenhouse in summer.
Purcell Mountain Lodge, an elegant, handcrafted timber frame building, sits at 2200m/7200ft in the middle of Canada's largest alpine meadow. The lodge has 10 guestrooms and there's a separate chalet. A full complement of trained staff takes care of guiding, feeding and pampering.
Avalanche Safety
Before setting out into the backcountry, skiers should be fully trained and equipped to deal with an avalanche situation. The Canadian Avalanche Centre publishes regular avalanche forecasts on its website.
