The mountains and river valleys around the town of Golden provide habitat for a multitude of wildlife species. Look to the skies for osprey, bald eagles, ravens and any number of smaller bird species. The Columbia Wetlands is an important ecosystem and provides habitat for many local creatures; tours of the area are available.
Large mammals near Golden include black and grizzly bears, mountain goats, mountain sheep, deer, moose and elk. Feel like part of a wolf pack at the Northern Lights Wildlife Centre near Golden, which offers interpretive talks and the chance to walk with wolves (great for photographers).
Bear watching tours are also possible near Golden; one of the things that make a visit to Golden exceptional is the 100% certainty of being able to view a grizzly bear at the Grizzly Bear Refuge at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort.
