This small town on the TransCanada Highway may have its fair share of fast food outlets, but it also has great culinary aspirations, with excellent independent bistros and the highest elevation restaurant in Canada.
Breakfast in Golden
Another great breakfast is at the Kicking Horse River Lodge - a building that was honoured by National Geographic Magazine as "one of the 50 best eco-lodges in the world". Find it next to the river on 9th Street North.
Soup, Sandwiches & Books
Try the soup, sandwich and book selection at Bacchus Books and Café, next to the bridge on 9th Ave North. Upstairs, the mostly vegetarian food is served on cafe tables among the bookshelves. Downstairs, there are more intriguing titles. Remember to look up at the tin ceiling.

Dinner Options in Golden
The Whitetooth Bistro, also on 9th Ave North, is one of the busiest places in town, and the food is great - try the elk cassoulet.
A true Canadian log cabin restaurant, the Kicking Horse Grill has the best steaks in town, a great caesar salad, and excellent service too. South of the river on 9th St. South.
The Cedar House Restaurant, on Hefti Rd, off Hwy 95 about five minutes south of town, made the top 50 in Anne Hardy's national restaurant guide, Where to Eat in Canada.
Highest Restaurant in Canada
Take the gondola to the very top of the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. The Eagle's Eye Restaurant, with its French inspired menu, is just a little closer to heaven - at an elevation of 2347m/7700ft. A good choice after a day of skiing, or possibly in the middle of it - lunch is an affordable affair.
