Sightseers whale watching (Canadian Tourism Commission photo)
Whale watching takes place around Galiano Island and the surrounding Gulf Islands.
Orcas (also known as killer whales) are frequent visitors to these waters, and return each year to feast on local salmon runs.
Settle in with a blanket and picnic on the mossy rock shelves at Bellhouse Provincial Park to watch the passing parade of ferries, pleasure boats and, fingers crossed, black and white Orcas. Whales and other marine wildlife can be seen from viewpoints around the island, but the best way to see whales is to book a whale-watching tour.
During peak season (May to September) whale-watching tours depart daily from nearby Victoria, Vancouver and Steveston , and other Vancouver Island destinations.
There are no whale-watching tours operating from Galiano Island, but a local operator, Gulf Island Safaris, can do pick-ups and drop-offs on Galiano (by request only, reservations required). Its bathroom-equipped Zodiac can pick up groups of four or more on charter outings departing from Montague Harbour and Sturdies Bay.
