Snowmobiling
Snowmobiling (Don Weixl photo)
The flat prairie lands and sweeping valleys of Fort St. John that make for great hiking in spring and summer and cross-country skiing in winter, are also optimally suited for exciting snowmobiling adventures.
Fort St. John is marked by a network of snowmobiling trails that range in terms difficulty and time duration. Sledders can choose easy-ride routes close to town or a multi-day treks into the Rocky Mountains, west of Fort St. John.
Snowmobiling at Charlie Lake
Charlie Lake, just minutes from Fort St. John, is a popular snowmobiling destination for local sledders, especially after a fresh snowfall. Explore nearby trails, cruise on the frozen lake (when ice density and thickness safely allows), and take a break for a hot drink at the A-Frame club chalet, Montney Park. Good places to launch for the day are Rotary RV Park at the south end of Charlie Park, or Montney Park at the northeast end.

Snowmobiling in the Rocky Mountains
Snowmobile Redfern Trail in the Rocky Mountains, located 250km/155.3mi northwest Fort St. John, and discover the remote and pristine wilderness of the Muskwa-Kechika Management Area (M-KMA), dedicated to sustainably managing interaction between human activities and wilderness and wildlife. Located with the M-KMA, Redfern-Keily Provincial Park contains designated snowmobile trails to great wilderness camping areas. As well, an available public cabin accommodates 6-8 people on a first-come first-serve basis.
Stewart Lake Trail
A family-friendly snowmobiling option is Stewart Lake Trail, located at the top of south Taylor Hill, south of the break-check pullout at Mile 30 of the Alaska Highway. The trail does include some steeper hills, but is otherwise relatively easy.
Practical Points
- Snowmobilers must supply their own equipment.
- It is recommended that snowmobilers wear an avalanche beacon, bring a shovel, probe and travel in groups.
- Snowmobilers should be prepared for a wilderness experience, be aware of snowmobiling safety, and pack for quickly changing cold weather.
