Skiing & Snowboarding
Skiing (Canadian Tourism Commission photo)
Fort St. James residents are proud of their local ski hill, Murray Ridge Ski Area, a family-oriented resort with 22 alpine runs, one main T-bar and a handle tow.
The resort's main T-bar is its signature feature, as it's reported to be the longest running in North America. By car, Murray Ridge is located a few minutes north of Fort St. James.
Murray Ridge Terrain
The mountain offers long, mellow-to-steep pitches suited to all levels of experience. The trees are especially great on powder days. However, skiers and snowboarders can still race on groomers if the skies haven't opened in a while. The hill also has a terrain park.
The Murray Ridge Ski Area also features 20km/12mi of cross-country ski trails adjacent to the downhill part. The Nordic trails include a 3.7km/2.3mi loop lit for night skiing. Snowshoers are also welcome here.
Facilities and Lessons
Murray Ridge's facilities include a beautiful lodge with a lounge upstairs; a toasty wood stove, seating area and cafeteria downstairs; and a rental shop that offers equipment repairs and tune-ups, also downstairs. The mountain also has ski and snowboard lessons for groups and individuals of all ages. The staff and ski patrol at Murray Ridge are friendly and willing to help beginner to expert downhillers find terrain that's right for them.
Pick up a Murray Ridge pamphlet from the Fort St. James Visitor Centre for more information on hours of operation, lessons, and prices.
