Smithers Transportation & Maps

A four-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicle, equipped with winter tires during the snow season, is the best way to get to and around Smithers and area.

Downtown and recreational areas close to town are easy to explore on foot but many attractions are outside of the main town core.

Rental cars are available – at the airport or downtown - if visitors wish to have a vehicle while they are in Smithers but don't drive there.

Limited Public Transportation

Smithers has a fixed route public bus, but its services are limited. The only bus route loops downtown then follows Highway 16 to Telkwa, 10 minutes east of town and back. The bus drives the route only every couple hours or so on weekdays and even less frequently on weekends. Passengers can call the public bus service to arrange a door-to-door pickup for the regular fare but only on weekdays from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

For fun in the summer, travellers can rent bikes at the two local bike shops. Biking is a leisurely way to get around and see part of neighbourhoods you wouldn't usually notice if you were driving.

Bus and Rail Travel

To arrive in or depart from Smithers, visitors can take the Greyhound Bus. Close to two departures a day leave for and arrive from Prince George in the east and Terrace in the west.

VIA Rail, travelling the same route as Greyhound but on the tracks, also passes through Smithers twice a week. The train weaves on and off the main Highway, it's a great way to relax and enjoy stunning scenery and sometimes wildlife that not everyone gets to see.

Air Travel

Air Canada and Hawkair plus a couple of smaller air charter companies service the Smithers Regional Airport. There are a few flights to Vancouver and flights leave once-daily for Prince George, Kamloops, Kelowna and Terrace, and every couple of days for Dease Lake. Plane and helicopter charters are also available.

Maps

A colourful, though not very detailed, tourist map with the Town of Smithers on one side and Bulkley Valley attractions on the other is available for free from the Smithers Visitor Centre at the corner of Main Street and Highway 16. It's hard to get lost in Smithers so the map is mostly helpful for finding attractions.
