Rossland Transportation & Maps

Rossland is located at the junction of Highway 3B and Highway 22 in the Kootenay Rockies region.

Car Travel and Rentals

Exploring Rossland and the surrounding area by vehicle is the most convenient way to get around. The high elevation brings a substantial amount of snowfall during the winter and there are no flat sections, except along Columbia Avenue (Rossland's main street). Highway 22, which leads up to Rossland, is well-developed and maintained, however, snow tires are required on vehicles during the winter season. As the city is built on a mountain (or rather on a side of an ancient volcano), it's not unusual to pass residents using their snow racers (a toboggan with steering wheel and skis) to get around.

Car rentals are available at the Spokane, Kelowna and the Castlegar Airports.  Car rentals from Trail are available in town, but not at this airport.

Air Travel

Rossland is served by five airports, including the Canadian Rockies International Airport near Cranbrook (a 3.5 hour drive), Kelowna International Airport (a 3.5 hour drive), Trail Regional Airport (a 15-minute drive), Castlegar Municipal Airport (30-min drive) as well as Spokane International Airport in Washington (2.5 hour drive).

There are daily flights from Vancouver and Calgary (via Air Canada Jazz) into Castlegar Airport, and Pacific Coastal Airlines flies from Vancouver to Trail.

Air Canada, WestJet and Horizon Air fly to Kelowna's airport. Alaska Airlines, Delta, Frontier, Horizon Air, Northwest, Southwest, United and US Airways fly to the Spokane Airport.

There is a Red Express Shuttle to Rossland, available from Castlegar, Trail, Kelowna and Spokane, WA airports.  Advance bookings for the shuttle are necessary.

Bus and Public Transportation

A Trail city bus (Kootenay Boundary Transit System) provides regular access to and from Rossland, but on a very limited route. There are no shuttles, rental cars, or taxis available within Rossland. The closest taxi and car rental services are available in Trail, 10km/6mi away.

Greyhound Bus services Trail on a regular basis, and its depot is located at 1355 Bay Avenue. A taxi or city bus can be taken from Trail to Rossland.

Getting Around Downtown

Stores and boutiques are located close together, making shopping an easy stroll around town.  There is also an extensive trail system in place within the city, offering convenient access to walking, hiking and biking trails.
