Kootenay Rockies Transportation & Maps

Meadows-in-the-Sky Parkway, Tom Ryan photo

Getting There

The mountainous Kootenay Rockies region is well served by road and air. Major highways feed in and out of it in all directions and there are multiple cross-border access points for both the U.S. and Alberta. Flying is a magnificent way to enter the region, as it gives you a spectacular bird's-eye view of the mountains, lakes and river valleys for which the Kootenay Rockies region is renowned. Cranbrook’s Canadian Rockies International Airport offers scheduled commercial flights as well as direct service from a major U.S. hub airport (Salt Lake City, Utah). Airports in Castlegar and Trail also service scheduled commercial flights, while several smaller air hubs in the area cater to charter flights.

Getting Around

While the Kootenay Rockies is a mountainous region, its rugged beauty is easy to access by car thanks to a dependable highway system. Most cities and towns are situated along or very near it. When you encounter a lake or river along the highway that isn't bridged, look for signs directing you to an Inland Ferries pick-up/drop-off site. If you're headed somewhere "off the beaten track" you'll probably find that your destination lies somewhere along a publicly accessible logging road. Bus travel is another great way to get around. Commercial bus services reaches into almost every corner of the region.

Below are some of the links to get you started:
