While most visitors arrive in Golden in their own car, recreational vehicle or by motorcycle or bicycle, there are other options for transportation and getting around town.
Car TravelFrom Vancouver, Golden is a one or two day 713km/443mi drive on Highway #1, the TransCanada Highway. Calgary is 262km/163mi further east, a journey that should take only two and half hours. Highway #95 intersects with the TransCanada Highway in Golden, and heads south to the Kootenay Rockies communities of Radium Hot Springs (105km/65mi) and Cranbrook (284km/154mi), and then connects with US Hwy 95 at the US border.
Cars and trucks can be rented from the National Car Rental agency in Golden, on 11th Ave North. Winter tires or chains are essential for winter driving in these mountains. Avalanches can cause road closures in the Rogers Pass area. Carry food and extra warm clothing when travelling in winter.
Air TravelScheduled air service is through Calgary International and the Canadian Rockies International Airport in Cranbrook. Both airports are approximately three hours drive from Golden, and both offer car rentals. A shuttle service from Calgary Airport is provided by Pure Travel Group.
Golden has a small airport that is used primarily by private and charter aircraft.
Public TransportationGreyhound Canada operates four buses per day to destinations east and west along the TransCanada Highway, and a daily service on Highway #95 to Radium and points south.
BC Transit operates a bus service that serves Golden, the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort and some rural areas. Taxi services are also available.
Getting AroundMaps of downtown Golden and the surrounding areas are available at the Visitor Centre on Golden Donald Upper Rd, east of town, just off the TransCanada Highway.
