Feet, bikes, and automobiles are the primary modes of transportation for visitors on Galiano Island. There is no taxi or year-round public bus service, but rental vehicles can be hired and shuttle buses run in the summer. Hitchhiking is an acknowledged part of island culture, so if need be, stick out a thumb and catch a ride.
BC FerriesPick and choose among a variety of BC Ferries options seven days a week when sailing to Sturdies Bay via Tsawwassen on the BC mainland or from Vancouver Island's Schwartz Bay terminal south of Victoria.
Galiano is the first Gulf Islands stop from Tsawwassen aboard the Queen of Nanaimo. Less than an hour long, these sailings leave mid-morning and early evening year-round with extra runs in the summer.
Departures from Schwartz Bay, meanwhile, range from non-stop trips (70 minutes) to longer outings that pull into Mayne and Pender islands before arriving at Sturdies Bay. Important note: Passengers pay for a return fare and no ticket or payment is required when returning from Galiano.
Shuttle BusesGet a ticket to ride on The Day Tripper Bus Co.'s 16-passenger yellow school bus, which serves BC Ferries foot traffic in the summer. Patrons of the Hummingbird Pub can also take advantage of a shuttle bus that runs to and from Montague Provincial Park six times each evening from late May until the end September.
Air Travel Seaplanes arrive daily at Montague Harbour. Seair Seaplanes and Saltspring Air provide year-round service, while Kenmore Air flies from Seattle on a seasonal basis beginning in April. Charter flights can also be booked from those carriers as well as Saltspring Air, Harbour Air, and Pat Bay Air.
Rentals Mountain bikes and kids bikes can be rented by the day or week at Galiano Bicycle (a five-minute walk from the ferry). Rent a moped or boat from the Toadies Roadies office at Montague Harbour Marina. Smart Cars are available for daytrips from the Galiano Oceanfront Inn and Spa.
Maps The free Galiano Island Visitors' Guide is available aboard BC Ferries and at the Galiano Tourist Information Booth in Sturdies Bay.
