Ice Skating at Sun Peaks, Tourism BC/Don Weixl photo
Sun Peaks Resort's perfect powder and crisp sunny days have much more to offer in addition to downhill and cross-country skiing. Snowboarding, snowmobiling, dogsledding, snow biking, and snowshoeing add variety to the Sun Peaks experience. Ice skating and drop-in hockey is available at the outdoor skating rink just steps from the main village, where equipment rentals are available. Snowmobiling Well-groomed rails run along the base of Sun Peaks' three mountains and ungroomed runs traverse the valley floor, providing a variety of snowmobiling options. Sun Peaks Snowmobile Tours offers a selection of beginner, intermediate, and custom tours. The nightly tour includes a campfire cookout at the McGillivray Lake Cabin. Helmets with visors and all exterior clothing (except gloves) are provided. At the Adventure Park children, aged three to nine years, can ride a miniature snowmobile in a monitored area. Dogsledding Dogsledders can mush or ride as a passenger in a guide's sled. Choosing to mush requires being in good physical condition, as running alongside the sled on hills or inclines is a possibility. Purebred Malamute Huskies and Canadian Eskimo dogs take visitors on this authentic Canadian activity. Snow Biking One of the newest winter sports in North America, snow biking is a combination of skiing and cycling. Snow bikes have a low centre of gravity and full suspension, which some argue makes them easier to master than downhill skiing or snowboarding. Snow bike lessons and rentals are available all winter. Snowshoeing Rent aluminum snowshoes and head out on a guided snowshoeing excursion suited to individual ability and preference. Tours feature designated snowshoe trails with bird feeding stations, wildlife viewing, and a snow cave. There are also alpine and moonlight tours, and snowshoe golf, which includes golf club rentals, colored balls, course maps. Sleigh Rides One of Sun Peaks' most popular pastimes is the sleigh ride. The evening ride includes hot apple cider and dessert around a campfire. Children three years of age and under can ride for free when accompanied by a parent.
