Houston has a multitude of mountain ranges excellent for snowmobiling. The most popular areas are well-maintained, well-mapped and frequently used in the winter months by locals and visitors.

Snowmobile Terrain

A variety of terrain is open for adventuring - for families, adventurers, beginners and experts. Cruise through the alpine and enjoy the views, or pump some adrenaline and test those skills by revving up steep hills and across fields of untouched powder.

Some of the most popular areas are the Telkwa Range, Dungate Meadows, Morice Mountain, Tableland Mountain and Rhine Ridge, several of which feature a day-use cabin for lunch stopovers. The local snowmobile club grooms the access routes to these places regularly. Many of the areas are also close to town. Some places are just a few minutes drive from downtown while others are closer to an hour's drive away.

Practical Points

  • Houston's snowmobile season depends on the snow but usually goes from November until late spring.
  • Sledders should have sufficient knowledge of the sport and the proper safety gear.
  • A couple local stores sell necessary equipment such as helmets, avalanche beacons, shovels and probes, but snowmobiles are not available.

Pick up a Riding the Houston Area map from the Houston Visitor Centre on Hwy 16, or stop by the BC Snowmobile Federation office, kitty corner to the Visitor Centre.
