Golden Snowmobiling

Snowmobiling in Golden - White n'Wild
Snowmobiling in Golden, White n'Wild photo
There are loads of good reasons to snowmobile in the Golden area. The snow is light and dry, the scenery is awesome, and the terrain is as good as it gets. Visitors from Alberta and Saskatchewan have one more persuasive reason - this is the first major sledding area west of the Rocky Mountain national parks.

Snowmobile Clubs

You know that the sledding has to be great when a town the (relatively small) size of Golden has two snowmobile organizations. The Golden Snowmobile Trail Society and the Golden Snowmobile Club work together to maintain and groom an extensive trail system.

Where to Snowmobile in Golden

Drop by the Golden Visitor Centre and pick up a handy, pocket-sized guide that uses satellite images to illustrate trails, area boundaries, overall terrain and basic avalanche information. The big names are Quartz Creek, Gorman Lake and Silent Pass. Day use fees apply in all three areas.

Quartz Creek

Off Highway 1, about 40km/25mi west of town, Quartz Creek features a little more than 14km/9mi of groomed trail from the parking area to the cabin, and un-groomed areas in the Prairie Hills Area beyond the cabin.

Gorman Lake

Not recommended for beginners, the Gorman Lake area is accessed via 32km/20mi of maintained trail that takes off on the Dogtooth FSR (Forest Services Road). At the end of the road, there is access to an extensive area of extreme terrain. Avalanche awareness is essential in this area.

Silent Pass

The route up to the Silent Pass area follows the Spillimacheen FSR into the valley behind the Dogtooth Range. There's lots of terrain, including some rolling hills in the alpine area.
