Whistler Snowboarding

Snowboarders and The Black Tusk
Snowboarders and The Black Tusk, Toshi Kawano photo
With two mountains, three glaciers, more than 200 marked trails and an average snowfall of more than 10 m/33 ft, it’s no surprise that US-based TransWorld SNOWBoarding magazine has named Whistler the best resort in North America for three consecutive years, or that Australia's Luxury Travel Magazine has named it Best Overseas Ski Resort every year since 2005.

Ross Rebagliati, winner of the first ever Olympic gold medal for snowboarding, honed his skills on these slopes, and in February 2010 Olympic glory will return to Whistler when the village serves as the official Host Mountain Resort for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Whistler's PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola

In December, 2008, the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola opened in Whistler. Linking Whistler and Blackcomb mountains, the PEAK 2 PEAK enables riders to easily access terrain on both mountains with a speedy and scenic 11-minute, 4.4-km/2.7-mi ride. PEAK 2 PEAK gondola cars travel the longest unsupported span in the world — over 3 km/1.8 mi from tower to tower — and at their highest point are suspended 436 m/1427 ft above Fitzsimmons Creek. Two of the 28 cars feature glass bottoms, providing exhilarating views of the valley below.

Most Ski/Boarding Terrain in North America

Together, Whistler and Blackcomb mountains offer more terrain than any destination on the continent, and with the opening of the PEAK 2 PEAK the two mountains now feature the longest continuous lift system on Earth.

North America’s Best Terrain Park

Whistler Blackcomb’s epic Nintendo Terrain Parks have earned the resort the Number One ranking in TransWorld SNOWBoarding’s Top Ten Best Parks category.

Family-Friendly Snowboarding in Whistler

Whistler is the ideal spot for a family ski or snowboard vacation. Childcare is available for infants and toddlers, snowboard schools cater to both younger children and teenagers, and off-the-slopes activities such as dogsledding are sure to delight kids of all ages.

Award-winning
Après-ski and Dining

Looking to relax after a day of riding? Whistler’s acclaimed après and dining are sure to impress. US-based Skiing Magazine recently recognized Whistler as having the best après scene on the continent, while the latest edition of UK-based Hardy’s Skiing and Snowboarding Guide named one favourite local establishment the best après venue in North America.

Whistler’s dining scene is equally renowned. Celebrate a special occasion by sabering champagne in a 20,000-bottle cellar, or enjoy sushi that, according to the New York Times, features “some of the best Japanese artistry east of Tokyo.” Whatever your tastes or budget, Whistler’s award-winning restaurants will dazzle.

Practical Points

Accommodations of all types and for all budgets are available in and around Whistler.

Whistler's snowboard season usually runs from late November to early June, though glacier snowboarding is available on Blackcomb Mountain well into the summer.

Group and private lessons are available for all levels of snowboarder, and equipment rental shops abound.

In addition to snowboarding, Whistler and its surroundings offer excellent downhill skiingcross-country skiing and snowshoeing, not to mention outstanding cat-skiing and heli-skiing opportunities.
