Vancouver Island Snowboarding
Snowboarder, Mount Washington Alpine Resort photo
Vancouver Island’s mountains are blasted with Pacific Ocean air, which creates the deepest all-natural snow base of any resort in Canada. Average snowfall is in the range of 10.5m/35ft, so it is not surprising that in 2009, Ski Canada Magazine voted the Island's ski/snowboard resort, Mount Washington , in the top twelve for Best Powder. Mount Cain is the Island's other, smaller resort, and also suits families and powder fans.
Vancouver Island snowboarding offers a diverse range of terrain and challenges, attracting everyone from international training teams (several trained here in advance of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games) to families looking for fun, relaxing runs.
With an elevation of 1,588m/5,215ft, Mount Washington offers one of the most spectacular coastal alpine settings in North America. Summit views showcase the Strait of Georgia, valley communities and mainland British Columbia in the distance.
Located within the Comox Valley, Mount Washington Alpine Resort is the largest ski/snowboard facility on the island. Choose between 60 groomed runs with beginner to advanced terrain, two terrain parks and nine lifts. Gentle slopes and sweeping cruisers contrast the resort’s rugged Outback side, which has steep drops, deep alpine chutes and bowls, and some of the world's best tree riding.
Mount Washington Alpine Resort is accessible via the Strathcona Parkway (exit 130) off Highway 19. Accommodation is available at the resort, as well as in Courtenay and Campbell River .
Two hours northwest of Campbell River , Mt. Cain Alpine Resort is a perfect place for families and powder fans. Chains are required on the access road, located off Highway 19 (Island Highway).
Only open on weekends and Mondays – meaning heaps of untouched powder – Mt. Cain Alpine Resort offers a vertical drop of 457m/1,499ft with 18 runs of great terrain, friendly staff, and short lift line-ups.
Practical Points for Snowboarders
The ski/snowboard season usually runs from early December to mid-April, depending on conditions
Connections to central Vancouver Island from the mainland are made easily via airlines and ferries.
Highway 1 connects drivers to ski/snowboard areas from communities along the east coast of the island.
There are also cross-country skiing trails and plenty of tobogganing, snow tubing and snowshoeing opportunities within the region as well.
