Vancouver Island’s Mount Washington Alpine Resort is one of the most spectacular coastal alpine settings in North America. Nestled between Strathcona Provincial Park to the west and the Strait of Georgia to the east, its ideal location is what produces the resort’s epic annual snowfall. Mount Washington averages 10.5 metres or 35 feet of snowfall every season which is likely why it was voted in the top 10 for Best Powder by Ski Canada Magazine (2008). Its location also explains is mild climate with an average winter temperature of -2C (31F), a location where it is possible to ski the island’s mountains and surf the rugged west coast all in the same vacation.

Challenging Enough for Olympic Athletes

The pros like Vancouver Island's ski resort too. Mount Washington's excellent powder and conditions has made it a great training ground for international teams and athletes looking to perfect their moves in advance fo the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. The Canadian Snowboard Race Team spent their spring training here in 2008, and the American and Swiss Snowboard race teams also train here. Mount Washington is Canadian snowboarding legend and Comox Valley resident Brian Savard’s home resort. Yet the resort also attracts families in droves. Terrain parks offer both black diamond experts the most challenging experience while intermediate and younger riders can take advantage of evenly spaced jumps, boxes and rails throughout the park providing riders maximum flow.

Boarding Groomed Runs or Exploring the Outback

A variety of terrain ranging from long, sweeping runs for beginners to the new Outback where 400-acres offer magnificent pillow lines, deep alpine bowls, and steep drops. The mountain's nine lifts serve over 1,600 acres of board terrain including the 6 person, high speed Hawk Chair. Mount Washington is well known for its excellent tree riding. The terrain park has expanded to offer new flat, down-flat, multi-drop, and battleship boxes for the 2008/09 season.

Practical Points

Accommodations include board in/board out lodges and chalets for more than 4,000 people as well as all types for all budgets in the community of Courtenay, 20 minutes from the resort base.
