Kootenay Rockies Snowboarding

Panorama Mountain Village
Panorama Mountain Village photo
The Kootenay Rockies region is home to more than half of British Columbia’s 13 major winter resorts. The region's incredible mountain ranges - including the Canadian Rocky Mountains - are renowned for incredible terrain and powder (with an average annual snowfall of 12-18m/40-60ft).

Ski Canada magazine has awarded Kootenay Rockies’ resorts with “Best Powder" (Revelstoke Mountain Resort, Fernie Alpine Resort, Whitewater Winter Resort, Red Mountain Resort; 2009), “Best Steeps” (Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, Red Mountain Resort; 2007), and “Best Tree Skiing" (Red Mountain Resort, Whitewater Winter Resort; 2007).

Kootenay Rockies winter resorts have uncrowded slopes, short lift lines, and a laid-back, friendly atmosphere. The quantity and close proximity of the region's resorts allows snowboarders to sample a variety of slopes along the “Powder Highway,” while visiting small, historic towns along the way (such as Kimberley, RosslandNelson or Revelstoke).

Kootenay Rockies Winter Resorts

Fernie Alpine Resort: is 1,013ha/2,504ac of amazing vertical (857m/2,816ft) and deep, dry powder (more than 8.8m/29ft annually). Terrain varies from five massive alpine bowls to glades, chutes and cliffs.

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort (near Golden) bills itself as "the Champagne Capital of Canada" and features excellent powder (7m/23ft annually) and big mountain terrain, with chutes, bowls, glades and steeps.

Kimberley Alpine Resort is a family-friendly destination, combining convenient access (20min from the Canadian Rockies International Airport), 80 runs of various difficulty, uncrowded slopes, and consistent snow.

Snowboarding at Panorama Mountain Village - Tourism BC/David GlunsPanorama Mountain Village, near Invermere along the "Powder Highway" features a snowboarding area of nearly 1,200ha/3,000ac, including tabletops, kickers, spines, rails, and half pipes of the Showoff Terrain Park.

Red Mountain Resort, with 87 runs, uncrowded slopes, incredible gladed tree skiing, exhilarating steeps, and powder-filled bowls, is a favourite with Rossland locals.

Revelstoke Mountain Resort, set high among the Selkirk and Monashee mountain ranges, is British Columbia's newest winter resort, and boasts the longest lift-serviced vertical in North America, at 1,713m/5,620ft. The resort is known for its heaps of champagne powder.

Whitewater Winter Resort, near Nelson, is perfect for powderhounds and backcountry enthusiasts; up to 12m/44ft of dry, light snow can fall in a season.
