The Kootenay Rockies region is home to more than half of British Columbia’s 13 major winter resorts. The region's incredible mountain ranges - including the Canadian Rocky Mountains - are renowned for incredible terrain and powder (with an average annual snowfall of 13m/43ft. Ski Canada magazine has awarded Kootenay Rockies’ resorts with “Best Powder,” “Best Steeps,” and “Best Trees.” Kootenay Rockies winter resorts have uncrowded slopes, short lift lines, and a laid-back, friendly atmosphere. The quantity and close proximity of the region's resorts allows snowboarders to sample a variety of slopes along the “Powder Highway,” while visiting small, historic towns along the way (such as Kimberley , Rossland , Nelson or Revelstoke ).
Kootenay Rockies Winter Resorts Fernie Alpine Resort: is 1,011ha/2,500ac of amazing vertical (857m/2816ft) and deep powder (more than 8.8m/29ft annually). Terrain varies from alpine bowls to gladed areas.
Kicking Horse Mountain Resort , near Golden - "the champagne capital of Canada" - features excellent champagne powder (7m/23ft annually) and big mountain terrain, with chutes, bowls and glades.
Kimberley Alpine Resort is a family-friendly destination, combining convenient access (20min from the Canadian Rockies International Airport), 80 runs of various difficulty, uncrowded slopes, and consistent snow.
Panorama Mountain Village , near Invermere along the "Powder Highway" features a snowboarding area of approximately 1,200ha/3,000ac, including tabletops, kickers, spines, rails, and half pipes of Showoff Terrain Park.
Red Mountain Resort , with 87 runs, uncrowded slopes, incredible gladed tree skiing, exhilerating steeps, and powder-filled bowls, is a favourite with Rossland locals.
Revelstoke Mountain Resort set high among the Selkirk and Monashee Mountain, British Columbia's newest winter resort, and boasts the longest lift-serviced vertical in North America, at 1,713m/5,620ft. The resort averages 12-18m/40-60ft of champagne powder annually.
Whitewater Winter Resort , near Nelson , is perfect for powderhounds and backcountry enthusiasts; up to 13m/43ft of dry, light snow can fall in a season.
Planning a Snowboarding Trip Accommodations at resorts usually include a range of ski-in/ski-out, or on-mountain options, with additional accommodation available in surrounding communities. Equipment rentals and lessons are available at all major resorts in the Kootenay Rockies region. Most resorts also offer free mountain orientation tours. In addition to snowboarding and downhill skiing , many resorts offer other activities such as cross-country skiing , snowshoeing , dogsledding , and snowmobiling .
