Kootenay Rockies Skiing (Downhill)

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort

The Kootenay Rockies region is dominated by amazing mountain ranges – the Monashees, Purcells, Selkirks, and Rockies – and incredible powder, with 12-18m/40-60ft of light, dry snow falling annually. This ideal combination of terrain and powder is serviced by more than half of British Columbia's major ski resorts.

Ski Canada magazine has awarded Kootenay Rockies’ resorts with “Best Powder" (Revelstoke Mountain Resort, Fernie Alpine Resort, Whitewater Ski Resort, Red Mountain Resort; 2009), “Best Steeps” (Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, Red Mountain Resort; 2007), and “Best Tree Skiing" (Red Mountain Resort, Whitewater Ski Resort; 2007).

Kootenay Rockies ski resorts feature uncrowded slopes, short lift lines, and a laid-back, friendly atmosphere. The quantity and proximity of resorts along the Kootenay Rockies' "Powder Highway" enables skiers to sample a variety of slopes during a single visit to the region.

Kootenay Rockies Winter Resorts

At Revelstoke, visit Revelstoke Mountain Resort, BC’s newest ski resort (2009/10 is only its third season), housing the longest lift-serviced vertical in North America: 1,713m/5,620ft. This same base also provides access to cat-skiing and heli-skiing.

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, 148km/92mi east of Revelstoke near Golden, is aptly labelled “the champagne capital of Canada” and features endless light, dry powder (7m/23ft annually) and big mountain terrain consisting of chutes, bowls, glades and steeps.

South 119km/74mi of Golden, near Invermere, Panorama Mountain Village’s ski area covers 1,152ha/2,847ac; its Showoff Terrain Park is the biggest in the Canadian Rockies.

Kimberley Alpine Resort, 116km/72mi south of Invermere, is a great family-ski destination, combining convenient access (20min by car from the Canadian Rockies International Airport) with quiet, uncrowded slopes, and consistent snow.

Downhill Skiing Fernie Alpine Resort - Tourism BC/Dave HeathAt Fernie, 121km/75mi east of Kimberley, high in the Rocky Mountains, Fernie Alpine Resort offers 1,013ha/2,504ac of amazing vertical (857m/2,816ft), deep, dry powder (more than 8.8m/29ft annually), and varied terrain, from five massive alpine bowls to endless glades, chutes and cliffs.

Red Mountain Resort at Rossland, 272km/169mi west of Kimberley, is a favourite with locals, and features 88 runs, uncrowded slopes, gladed tree skiing, incredible steeps, and powder-filled bowls.

Northeast 76.5km/47.3mi from Rossland, near Nelson, Whitewater Ski Resort is perfect for powderhounds and backcountry skiing enthusiasts; up to 12m/44ft of dry, light snow falls annually.
