Vancouver Island Skiing (Downhill)

Skier, Mount Washington Alpine Resort
Skier, Mount Washington Alpine Resort photo
Vancouver Island’s mountains are blasted with Pacific Ocean air, creating a ski terrain with the deepest all-natural snow base of any resort in Canada.
Skiers can expect average snowfall in the range of 10.5 metres or 35 feet every season, and so it is not surprising that in 2008, Ski Canada Magazine voted the Island's ski resort, Mount Washington, in the top 10 for Best Powder. Mount Cain is the Island's other, smaller resort, suiting families and powder fans.

Vancouver Island skiing offers a diverse range of terrain and challenges, attracting everyone from international ski training teams (several have been training here in advance of national and international championships and the 2010 Olympic Winter Games) to families looking for fun, relaxing, smooth runs.

Mount Washington Alpine Resort

With a summit elevation of 1588m/5215 feet, Mount Washington also offers one of the most spectacular coastal alpine settings in North America - the summit views showcase the blue waters of the Strait of Georgia, valley communities and mainland British Columbia in the distance.

Located within the Comox Valley, Mount Washington Alpine Resort is the largest ski facility on the island and continues to expand its terrain and services. Choose between 60 groomed runs on its front face with beginner to advanced terrain, 2 terrain parks (one intermediate and one advanced) and 9 lifts. The backside of the mountain is also lift accessed.Gentle slopes and sweeping cruisers contrast the resort’s rugged Outback side where one can expect steep drops and deep alpine chutes and bowls as well as some of the best tree skiing in the world.

Facilities
Mount Washington has a variety of restaurants, a pub, and food booths in and around its alpine lodge; a snow school and "Kidz" area for lessons, rentals, programs and day care. It also features lit up runs for night skiing and mountain retail stores. Accommodation choices located at Mount Washington include luxury condominiums with fireplaces, full kitchens, living rooms and underground parking plus a variety of traditional ski chalets and townhouses located throughout the snowy Alpine Village.

Mount Washington Alpine Resort is accessible via the Strathcona Parkway (exit #130) off Hwy. 19. Accommodation is available at the resort, as well as in Courtenay and Campbell River.

Mount Cain Alpine Resort

Two hours northwest of Campbell River, Mt. Cain Alpine Resort offers a fantastic experience for skiers.  It is a perfect place for families and powder fans. Chains are required on the access road, located off Highway 19 – The Island Highway – and they are needed.

Only open on weekends – meaning heaps of untouched powder to be skiied – Mt. Cain Alpine Resort has great terrain, friendly staff, and short line-ups for lifts, making for an unforgettable day on the hill.

Facilities
Mt Cain Alpine Resort offers ski rentals, a restaurant and ski shop. To get there, take the exit off Hwy. 19 about two hours north of Campbell River.

Practical Points for Skiers

  • The ski season usually runs from early December to mid-April, depending on conditions
  • Connections to central Vancouver Island from the mainland are made easily via airlines and ferries.
  • Highway 1 connects drivers to ski areas from communities along the east coast of the island.
  • There are also cross-country skiing trails and plenty of tobogganing, snow tubing and snowshoeing opportunities within the region as well.
