Vancouver, Coast & Mountains Skiing (Downhill)

Cypress Mountain
Cypress Mountain, Insight Photography photo

The Vancouver, Coast & Mountains region offers some of the best and most accessible skiing in British Columbia, all within an easy drive of Vancouver, Host City for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Whistler, the 2010 Winter Games’ official Host Mountain Resort, has been named best ski destination in North America by US-based Skiing Magazine for an unprecedented 12 consecutive years, and things just keep getting better. In December, 2008, Whistler Blackcomb resort opened the record-breaking PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola, enabling skiers to travel quickly between the resort’s two vast ski mountains.

Those looking for a more small-scale ski experience can head east from Vancouver to the resorts of Manning Park and Hemlock, both of which lure skiers with pristine surroundings and uncrowded slopes.

Award-winning Skiing and Après Ski in Whistler

Whistler’s two mountains offer more skiable terrain than any other destination in North America. With over 200 runs, three glaciers, numerous terrain parks and, according to Skiing Magazine, the best après-ski scene on the continent, Whistler is a natural choice to host the world’s best skiers during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games

Whistler's PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola

In December, 2008 the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola opened in Whistler. Linking Whistler and Blackcomb mountains, the PEAK 2 PEAK allows skiers easy access to terrain on both mountains with a speedy and scenic 11-minute, 4.4-km/2.7-mi ride. PEAK 2 PEAK gondola cars travel the longest unsupported span in the world — over 3 km/1.8 mi from tower to tower — and at their highest point they will be suspended 436 m/1427 ft above Fitzsimmons Creek. Two of the 28 cars feature glass bottoms, providing exhilarating views of the valley below.

Skiing in Metro Vancouver

Vancouver’s three ski mountains — Cypress, Grouse, and Seymour — offer numerous runs and terrain parks, not to mention incredible views of the city and sea below. Cypress will host Olympic freestyle skiing and snowboard events during the 2010 Winter Games, and the mountain’s recently-installed half-pipe is open to guests.

Ski at Manning Provincial Park

Surrounded by pristine wilderness and renowned for its dry, powdery snow, Manning Park Resort offers more than two dozen marked trails, a terrain park, and over 56 ha/140 ac of skiable terrain. Off the slopes, check out Manning’s tube park and outdoor skating rink, or explore a vast network of marked and unmarked cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails.

Family-friendly Skiing at Hemlock

Hemlock Resort is a hidden gem found just northeast of Mission. The resort is a popular family ski destination thanks to its idyllic location, on-hill ski-in/ski-out accommodation, and varied terrain that’s suitable for all ages and abilities.

Practical Points

Ski seasons in the Vancouver, Coast & Mountains vary by location. Whistler’s season generally runs from late November to early June, with glacier skiing available well into July. For Manning, Hemlock, and Vancouver’s local mountains, the season generally runs from December to April.

Accommodations of all types and for all budgets are available in Vancouver and Whistler. Manning Park Resort offers free shuttle bus service between its lodge and the nearby slopes, while Hemlock Resort features on-hill, ski-in/ski-out accommodation.

All ski resorts in the Vancouver, Coast & Mountains are accessible by car and all are within three hours’ drive of Vancouver. Roads to ski hills are generally well maintained throughout the winter, though snow tires or chains may be required.

Bus service links Vancouver to its local mountains as well as to Whistler and Manning Park; there is no bus or shuttle service to Hemlock.

Rental equipment is available at all Vancouver, Coast & Mountains ski areas, as are lessons for skiers of all abilities.

In addition to downhill skiing, Vancouver, Coast & Mountains offers excellent snowboardingcross-country skiing, cat-skiing, heli-skiing, snowshoeing, and dogsledding opportunities.
