North Vancouver Skiing (Downhill)
Skiing at Cypress Mountain, Tourism BC/Insight Photography
While many BC visitors enjoy making a pilgrimage to Whistler to experience Olympic-class skiing, Vancouver 's North Shore provides options galore less than half an hour from downtown Vancouver. Between November and April, carve fresh powder and have fun with the whole family at Cypress Mountain , Grouse Mountain , and Mount Seymour. All mountains offer equipment rentals and lessons. Cypress Mountain Cypress Mountain was chosen as an official 2010 Olympic venue, hosting snowboarding and free style skiing. For Alpine skiing buffs, this big, terrain-rich area has more than 50 downhill runs with six chairlifts, including the high-speed Lions Express quad chair, which reaches the summit in four minutes. Cross-Country, Snowshoeing & Tubing Extensive cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails, a snow-tubing park, and the recently opened, 4,460 sq m/48,000 sq ft Cypress Creek Day Lodge are among the other amenities. Quaff an ale or lager at the Crazy Raven Bar and Grill after a long day of skiing. Access Cypress Mountain via Exit 8 off Highway 1 in West Vancouver . Cypress Coach Lines offers ticketed shuttle bus service to the mountain from multiple Vancouver locations. Grouse Mountain Skiing is just one of many highlights at Grouse Mountain . The 1,250m/4,100ft peak features a vertical drop of 384/1,260ft with 26 downhill runs to choose from (13 open for night skiing). It also has two terrain parks for freestyle skiers and snowboarders. Other signature experiences include the Skyride aerial tram that whisks visitors to the summit every 15 minutes, outdoor ice skating, snowshoeing, sleigh rides, ziplining, helijet tours, fine dining and casual restaurants, and the Endangered Wildlife Refuge with grizzly bears and wolves.
Olympic Activities at Grouse Mountain Grouse Mountain announced plans to stay open 24/7 and serve as the home of NBC's The Today Show during the 2010 Winter Olympics. It's the closest skiing mountain to downtown and can be accessed via a 15-minute drive, or public transit: take the SeaBus to North Vancouver 's Lonsdale Quay and board bus #236. Mount Seymour Many North Vancouver residents have fond memories of learning to ski at this affordable, family-friendly mountain, 30 minutes from downtown Vancouver. Choose from 20-plus downhill runs. Terrain & Tubing Parks The Northlands Terrain Park and the Young Guns Terrain Park offer exciting jump and jib features for skiers and riders of varying levels, while the Enquist Snow Tube Park is popular with kids. Tobogganing and snowshoeing are other options. Mount Seymour gets an annual average snowfall of 1,000cm/32.8ft, the most on Vancouver's North Shore. Reach Mount Seymour via the Trans-Canada Highway and the Mount Seymour Parkway.
