Mount Washington Alpine Resort Skiing (Downhill)

Powder Skiing, Mt Washington

Vancouver Island’s Mount Washington Alpine Resort is one of the most spectacular coastal alpine settings in North America. Nestled between Strathcona Provincial Park to the west and the Strait of Georgia to the east, its ideal location is what produces the resort’s epic annual snowfall. Mount Washington averages 10.5 metres or 35 feet of snowfall every season which is likely why it was voted in the top 10 for Best Powder by Ski Canada Magazine (2008). Its location also explains is mild climate with an average winter temperature of -2C (31F), a location where it is possible to ski in the morning and golf in the valley at one of many award-winning courses.

Mt. Washington and Olympic Athletes

The pros like Vancouver Island's ski resort too. Mount Washington's excellent powder and conditions has made it a great training ground for international teams and athletes looking to perfect their moves in advance of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

The resort will also host the BC Freestyle Skiing Championships in 2009, showcasing the province’s best mogul and aerials skiers. Yet the resort also attracts families through its numerous beginner and intermediate runs and add-ons such as night-skiing and a snow tubing park.

Groomed Runs and Backcountry Adventure

Mount Washington offers a variety of terrain from long, sweeping runs for beginners to the new Outback with 400-acres of magnificent glade skiing, pillow lines, deep alpine bowls, and steep drops. The mountain's nine lifts serve over 1,600 acres of ski terrain including the six-person, high speed Hawk Chair. Mount Washington is well-known for its excellent tree riding.

Practical Points

Accommodations include ski in/ski out lodges and chalets for over 4,000 people as well as all types for all budgets in the community of Courtenay, 20 minutes from the resort base.

Mount Washington offers an extensive inventory of alpine rental equipment and high-performance equipment as well as sales and equipment repair services. The snow school offers instruction for all ages and abilities.

Skiers can either drive to the mountain base or take the shuttle service from Courtenay. A 20-minute drive from the valley below, the resort is close to airline, ferry and major highway connections.

The resort’s ski season runs from late fall to mid-April.
