Downhill skiing has developed into a major winter activity in Kamloops since the development of Sun Peaks Resort . About 45 minutes from downtown Kamloops, Sun Peaks is a year-round destination with a range of outdoor recreation opportunities, including downhill and cross-country skiing in winter, and in summer, hiking and mountain biking . However, Sun Peaks is not the only winter fun destination in Kamloops: Mike Wiegele Ski Resort offers exciting heli-skiing, while Harper Mountain (a local favourite) features uncrowded family-friendly slopes. Sun Peaks Resort At Sun Peaks Resort ski or snowboard Tod Mountain's open bowls, Sundance Mountain's groomed cruisers, or Mount Morrisey's glades. The longest run stretches from the top of Tod Mountain 8km/5mi to the resort's village. The Austrian National Ski Team has in the past trained at Sun Peaks in prior to World Cup season. In addition to downhill skiing and snowboarding, winter at Sun Peaks offers excellent cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, dog-sledding, and ice-skating opportunities. Summer is no time to slow down either, as there is lots of hiking , mountain biking , and golfing to pursue. The Tyrolean/European styled village at Sun Peaks Resort features ski-in and ski-out accommodations , a range of restaurant options from bistros and pubs to fine dining, boutiques and shops.
Mike Wiegele Ski Resort For an ultimate deep-powder rush, heli-ski at Mike Wiegele Ski Resort, which each year attracts adrenaline-junkies from all over North America, Europe, Australia, and South America. Located 214 km/132 miles north of Kamloops along highway 5A, near Blue River, the resort's lodge sits at an elevation of 690m/2240ft. Harper Mountain Harper Mountain is one of the area's great family-friendly ski secrets. Approximately 16km/10mi northeast of Kamloops, Harper Mountain has good terrain for downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and snow-tubing. Night skiing is also an option.
