Heli Ski, Kootenay Rockies
Heli-skiing Valhalla Ranges, Dave Heath photo
If you want to heli-ski, you've come to the right region: the Kootenay Rockies is the birthplace of heli-skiing. The first ever commercial heli-ski week was pioneered in 1965 by Hans Gmoser in the Purcell's Bugaboo Mountains.

The Kootenay Rockies boasts a number of mountain ranges -the Monashees, Rockies, Selkirks, Purcells and Valhallas- all legendary for their soaring peaks and vast quantities of champagne powder. In fact, the heli-ski areas receive from 9-18 m (30-60 ft) of snow annually.

Most operators offer high-end lodgings and gourmet dining. Private heli-ski touring is also available.

For information on heli-skiing operators in the area, visit the HeliCat Canada website.
