A handful of heli-skiing operators work out of the small Golden Airport, flying skiers and snowboarders into a massive area of high peaks, glaciers and bowls. Their commitment, as one operator puts it, is to share "the best run of our lives" day after day. For clients, this means adventure, excitement, legendary powder and fresh tracks - not only fresh after a new dump of snow, but sometimes skiing slopes that no one has ever skied before.
Purcell Helicopter Skiing Continuing a century-old tradition in Golden, this company's owner, Rudi Gertsch, is an experienced mountain guide from Switzerland. On a huge tenure south of Golden, in the Purcell Mountains, the company has been offering skiers thrilling powder adventures for more than 30 years. Purcell Helicopter Skiing offers single day skiing and boarding, and customized multi-day packages. Powder skis are available for rent.
Great Canadian Heli-Skiing Great Canadian offers packages of between two and seven days, with unlimited vertical. Accommodation is provided at the Heather Mountain Lodge, as is breakfast, a picnic lunch and a gourmet evening meal. Also flying out of Golden, the company operates with a maximum of four skiers/snowboarders per group. In their brochure, Great Canadian stresses the importance of physical fitness over skiing experience, but then they also offer a hot tub and massage service at the end of a long day in the powder.
Chatter Creek It could be said that a helicopter-accessed backcountry lodge is its own form of heli-skiing. However, at Chatter Creek Lodge, where the focus is mainly on cat skiing, it is also possible to add a day or more of dedicated heli-skiing experience - and they guarantee a minimum vertical of 5200m/17000ft. For more information on heli-skiing in this area, drop by the Visitor Centre in Golden.
