You don't have to head north to Alaska or the Yukon for a dogsledding adventure — great opportunities are found right here in the southwest corner of British Columbia.
Only a half-hour drive from downtown Vancouver, Mount Seymour offers guided dogsledding tours through spectacular old growth, sub-alpine forest. Take in stunning views of Vancouver Island, Mount Baker (across the border in Washington State), and the city below as a team of canines does the work. These 1.5- to 2.5-hour tours run from November to May.
Just a two-hour drive from Vancouver on the Sea to Sky Highway, the four-season resort community of Whistler offers guided dogsledding tours in the Soo and Brandywine valleys from late November to March, weather permitting. Tours are generally 2.5 hours and include a light snack.
Dogsledding excursions at both Mount Seymour and Whistler feature Alaskan Racing Huskies — the same breed used in the world-famous Iditarod dogsled race. If conditions are ideal you might even have the opportunity to learn commands and drive the sled.
