Whitewater Winter Resort caters to those who love the winter experience. Their Nordic ski trails and a dedicated snowshoe trail share many of the same qualities that distinguish this resort from the rest of the pack.
Cross-country Ski Trails
Groomed and track-set daily for both Classic and Skate technique, the terrain is 100% Whitewater - with significant changes in elevation over the 20km/12mi of trails. The resort uses the same easiest, more difficult and most difficult classification for the 11 cross-country trails as it does for the Alpine runs. Expect a few technique-testing hills along the way - even on trails that come with the easiest designation.
Scenic Views
The scenery is gorgeous, with designated viewpoints identified on the trail map. En route for Hummingbird Pass, for example, skiers traverse the sunny, south-facing slope of White Queen Mountain, and can enjoy fantastic views from Evening Lookout.
Ski Packages, Lessons & Rentals
Whitewater offers a Discover Cross Country Skiing package for first timers, who can also take private lessons through the Mountain Learning Centre. Rentals (classic technique and snowshoes only) are available from the Nordic Centre Kiosk at the trailhead. Classic and skate equipment can be rented from Gerick Cycle and Sport on Baker Street in Nelson.
Where to Park
Officially, the trails begin at the kiosk at the lower end of the guest parking area, but it is possible to enter the trail system at a lower elevation. Park in the pull-out at the 10.5km mark on the Whitewater access road and walk down onto the trail. At some point during the trip, remember to pay the modest user fee at the kiosk at the upper end of the trail network.
Nelson Nordic Ski Club
The Nelson Nordic Ski Club also welcomes visitors at its valley-bottom trail network, at the intersection of Highway 6 and the Whitewater access road. Beginner skiers will probably find this terrain a little more forgiving. For more information on cross-country skiing, stop by the Whitewater Visitor Centre.
