Nordic Skiing, Silver Star Mountain Resort
Silver Star Mountain Resort
The Thompson Okanagan is one the province's major cross-country ski destinations. No matter where you choose to make tracks, you will find superlative skiing centres. For starters, the region's four major ski resorts -Apex, Big White, Silver Star and Sun Peaks- all offer terrific cross-country options, as does the family-friendly ski resort, Mount Baldy. In fact, Silver Star, coupled with its next-door neighbour, Sovereign Lakes Nordic Centre, is a key training centre for Nordic professionals, thanks to a long season, outstanding conditions and trails of all types and sizes. Those seeking a wilderness experience will find it at Wells Gray Provincial Park, while Kane Valley, Larch Hills and Logan Lake offer the best of both worlds - myriad groomed runs and backcountry trails close by regional cities.

Wells Gray Provincial Park

Wells Gray is a large, remote park; cross-country here means wilderness skiing. There are two areas with trails: Candle Creek, just outside the park boundary, is well maintained and groomed; within the park, there is the groomed Loppet Trail system plus seemingly unlimited backcountry trails and terrain. Most runs mix gentle plateaus with steep ridges, with huts along the way. Those with little backcountry experience are advised to explore the park through guided tours; outfitters offer multi-day, hut-to-hut backcountry treks along high alpine meadows.
