Silver Star Mountain Resort is a world-class cross-country ski destination, and that's no boast. Forbes Magazine has rated Silver Star the "Number One Nordic destination in North America". National teams and Olympic medallists come to Silver Star to train. But don't be intimidated.
Early Season Cross-Country Skiing
Early snow and excellent conditions get the season off to a quick start. At around 1664m/5500ft elevation trails are usually clear of valley cloud – sunny and bright. Moderate average temperatures (-5°C/23°F), excellent grooming and beautiful scenery make it a memorable experience for everyone from novice to elite athlete.
Huge Variety
Track skiers, skate skiers, Nordic touring and telemark enthusiasts glide through the forest or tackle challenging climbs and descents over steep terrain. With additional trails at the adjacent Sovereign Lake Nordic Club and combined tickets for the two venues, there's plenty of variety on more than 100km/60mi of trails.
Awesome Trails at Silver Star
Silver Star track sets more than 60km/37mi of trail daily with 4km/2.5mi of lit track for night skiing. There are also two certified biathlon ranges. The resort's colourful Victorian village is the central hub for cross-country activities. Silver Star Village Trails include six green (easy), seven blue (intermediate) and five black diamond (advanced) routes with a warm-up cabin at Silver Star Mountain viewpoint. The Putnam Creek area provides an additional four easy and three intermediate trails and a cabin at Paradise Camp.
Silver Star Snowsport School
Beginners try that first "free heel" run, experienced skiers, upgrade those skills with private or group lessons including special Ladies and Men's days programs at the Silver Star Snowsport School. Silver Star also offers cross-country ski camps in late November/early December each year. Equipment tune-ups and rentals are available in the Town Hall.
Sovereign Lake Nordic Ski Club
Sovereign Lake is a non-profit club that welcomes visitors to its 50km/31mi of groomed and ungroomed trails in Silver Star Mountain Provincial Park. The club hosted a 2005 cross-country World Cup race. Ski to the Black Prince cabin and warm up by the woodstove or climb to the lookout points for panoramic views.
Lessons & Rentals
Sovereign Lake provides plenty of variety with six novice trails, three intermediate trails and nine advanced trails, all interconnected for a wealth of choice. The club offers private, semi-private and group lessons from beginner to master class and equipment is available for rent at the day lodge. Sovereign Lake is accessible for the physically challenged, with wheelchair parking, accessible washrooms and equipment.
