Houston Cross-Country Skiing

About 8km/5mi from Houston, the Morice Mountain Nordic Ski Trails feature a number of loops good for both classic and skate skiing. Routes vary from beginner-to-expert and short-to-long. Some trails allow dogs and other are lit for night skiing.

Morice Mountain Nordic Ski Trails

The trails, which surround two lakes, several streams and wetlands, are only a few minutes drive east of town. Facilities near the parking-lot include a day lodge fit with tables and a woodstove, a waxing hut and washrooms. Several first aid kits, small shelters, and more washrooms are also found along the trail.

A wood cabin on Morice Mountain, big enough to sleep eight people, is also available for overnight stays. Skiers can pay the small fee for the cabin at a local business called Country-wide Printing and Stationery, or at the day lodge. No advance booking is necessary but note the trail to the cabin is 7km/4.3mi long and not groomed.

Morice Mountain Nordic Ski Club

The non-profit group that maintains the trails, the Morice Mountain Nordic Ski Club, also loans out a limited amount of equipment, offers lessons, and holds various events and races.

A map of the trails is available at the Houston Visitor Centre on Hwy 16. Houston's Nordic ski season depends on the snowfall, but usually begins around November and goes to late spring.
