Fort St. John is located in the only open prairie region of British Columbia, so there's no shortage of cross-country skiing opportunities. Upon winter's arrival, the local Whisky Jack Nordic Ski Club sets and maintains trails at Beatton Provincial Park and Fort St. John Links Golf Course. Outdoor adventurers can break free of groomed trails systems and venture out along the area's endless flat terrain. Whether traversing set cross-country ski trails or alternate routes, skiers should dress in layers and bring along extra clothing. Winter temperatures average between -18.4˚C/1.1˚F and -6˚C /21.2˚F, and sudden weather change is common.
Cross-Country Ski Beatton Provincial Park
Take the whole family cross-country skiing along Beatton Provincial Park's 12km/7.5mi of forested trails. Wide groomed trails and set tracks provide plenty of cross-country skiing opportunity, catered to various levels of skill and experience. There are relatively flat trail loops for beginners, and sloped hills for more advanced skiers seeking a challenge. The park's top loop trail is not groomed, but is skied often, and is therefore usually well carved.
Cross-Country Ski Links Golf Course
Spend a few hours cross-country skiing near town along the groomed trails at the Fort St. John Links Golf Course. The golf course's approximately 3km/1.86mi of skate and classic groomed trails, which are relatively flat and open, provide an excellent opportunity for beginning skiers and families to enjoy wide-open spaces and unique wilderness setting of Fort St. John.
Peace Island Park
Enjoy views of frost-covered trees while cross-country skiing along groomed trails at Peace Island Park, nestled along the banks of the 1923km/1195mi Peace River. Check with the Fort St. John Visitor Centre for more information about cross-country skiing in the area.
