Fernie offers three distinct cross-country ski areas, ranging from the valley-bottom golf course to the more challenging terrain of Island Lake Lodge and the Fernie Alpine Resort. At each, the scenery is fantastic.

Cross-Country Ski at Fernie Golf Course

The volunteer groomers of the Fernie Nordic Society maintain 8km/5mi of trails on the Fernie Golf Course. These trails, set for both skate and classic technique, will suit both beginner and intermediate skiers. The club runs a children's program that meets on Saturdays. Day passes can be ordered online through the club's website.

Island Lake Lodge

For a more strenuous workout, try the 12 km/7.5mi climb from the parking lot to Island Lake Lodge. Additional groomed trails are available from the lodge. An advance reservation can secure a snow cat ride up to the lake and an excellent lunch at Tamarack Lodge, one of the four buildings that make up the resort. Of course, skiing down to the parking lot is much faster, but does require a certain level of skill - especially on a full stomach. All trails are groomed for classic and skate technique, and are suitable for intermediate to advanced skiers. Access to this area requires a Fernie Nordic day pass or the purchase of an Island Lake package.

Fernie Alpine Resort

Park in lot number three for a workout at the Fernie Alpine Resort. The trail climbs steeply to the intersection of the Silk and Manchuria trails. Both lead to the Halfway Point Hut and the 5km/3mi Scandia Loop trail. The trail network, which adds up to approximately 14km/9mi, is suitable for intermediate to advanced skiers. Après-ski, the resort's pub and food services are close at hand.

Rentals

Cross-country ski equipment can be rented from The Quest at the Fernie Alpine Resort, from Fernie Sports on the highway at 12th Street, and from The Ski Base, downtown on 2nd Ave near 4th St. For more information, head to the Fernie Visitor Centre.
