Mountains reign supreme in British Columbia. In the winter, you can bet they have plenty of snow. There are terrific skiing and snowboarding mountains throughout the province as well as myriad backcountry skiing opportunities in national and provincial parks. For some of the world's best powder and heli-skiing, head to the Bugaboos in the Kootenay Rockies region. Then, of course, there is Whistler/Blackcomb, one of the top-rated ski resorts in North America, and co-host with Vancouver of the 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games.

Both cat-skiing and heli-skiing were pioneered in the Kootenay Rockies region, which is also home to some of the best snowmobiling terrain in the world. Mackenzie in the Northern British Columbia region and Sicamous in the Thompson Okanagan region are also snowmobile hot spots. Incredible cross-country ski terrain is found throughout the province, which in total has more than 50 designated ski areas. Another two growing winter sports in BC, pursued both leisurely and competitively, are dogsledding and snowshoeing.
