Vancouver Island Surfing

For years, surfers have known that the open coast of Vancouver Island with its innumerable rock reefs and white-sand beaches, is one of the most diverse, fertile and scenic wave zones on Earth.

For both board and kayak surfers, the Island offers opportunities that range from beginner-friendly beachbreaks to heavy, remote reefbreaks that are sought out by hardened waveriders from all over the world. Backed by lush rainforest and inhabited by orcas and sea lions, the emerald waters of Vancouver Island have become a northern nirvana for a stoked and fast growing population of Canadian surfers.

Whether its the blown-glass waves of a summer evening or the surging storm swells that batter the outer shores in winter, pulling on a 5mm wetsuit and stroking into power-packed wilderness waves is an essential and unforgettable Island experience.

Surf Spots on Vancouver Island

Long Beach
Long-board surfers are frequently seen riding the waves at Long Beach on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. Long Beach, a 20-km stretch of sand between Ucluelet and Tofino, offers exciting challenges to experienced surfers. These areas are the only places on the West Coast of Canada where you'll find surfers riding the waves year round.

Surf shops in Ucluelet and Tofino rent equipment and provide instruction. During the summer months, surf guards are in attendance in the Long Beach unit of Pacific Rim Nation Park.

Tahsis & Around
From Tahsis, a Nootka Sound port west of Campbell River, local charter operators take surfers to remote wilderness locations along the coastline.  To reach Tahsis, follow the well-maintained gravel road from Gold River or catch a ride on the MV Uchuck III, a passenger and freight vessel that offers excellent tours.

Jordan River & Sombrio Beach
Another popular surfing spot on Vancouver Island is Jordan River, located along the West Coast Road (Hwy. 14) in Juan de Fuca Marine Park.  Jordon River looks out over the open Pacific which send huge waves crashing onto the shore, especially during storms, and is a popular spot among the growing community of local surfers. Nearby, Sombrio Beach offers more surfing day trips from Victoria and Sooke.

Practical Points for Surfing

  • Because of the chilly water, full wetsuits, including hoods, gloves and booties, are recommended
  • Equipment rentals and lessons are available.
