Looking to emulate the early pioneers who explored North America by canoe? Or simply looking for a relaxing canoeing experience punctuated by stays at comfy B&Bs and campsites? The Powell Forest Canoe Route offers arguably the most dynamic canoeing anywhere on the Sunshine Coast.

Powell River Forest Canoe Route

Strictly speaking, the Powell River Forest Canoe Route covers a 57km/36mi semi-circle of eight lakes near Powell River, but that paddling distance can be extended to more than 150km/94mi with side trips added. Most estimates put it at 80km/50mi. Budget five to seven days. All major lakes on the Powell River Forest Canoe Route can be accessed by logging roads, making it feasible to do the route in sections. The most popular place to start is Lois Lake. To get there, exit Highway 101 20km/12mi east of Powell River and follow Canoe Route Main for 7km/4.5mi.

The best time of year to go is between June and October. Expect enrapturing visuals: soaring coastal mountains laden with cedar, fir, and spruce trees overlook fjord-like waters, and wildlife sightings, from bald eagles to black bears, are always possible. Along the way, check out the freshwater fishing on Horseshoe River and Ireland Lake. Near Nanton Lake, goggle at giant stumps from the logging era dating back to the 1920s. The trip culminates with a 29km/18mi paddle down Powell Lake. At the end, grab a beer and burger at the Shinglemill Marina.

Canoe Route Accommodation

There are about 20 campsites along the Powell River Forest Canoe Route, most of which offer picnic tables, toilets, and garbage cans. Toward the end of the route is Haywire Bay Regional Park, which has 12 waterfront campsites on the small Honeymoon Island, plus 33 more RV and tent sites on the mainland.

Prefer the B&B scene? Several reputable B&B's are scattered along the route, including Suncatcher Bed & Breakfast and Herondell Bed & Breakfast.

Practical Points

  • Regardless of the destination, always remember to pack purified water, food, bear spray, a cell phone, a first-aid kit, and other essential supplies.
  • The Powell River Forest Canoe Route isn't the only canoeing option in the Powell River area. Enjoy ocean canoeing in Desolation Sound Marine Park, Copeland Islands Marine Park, Okeover Inlet, and other spectacular saltwater bodies, as well as various lakes off the canoe route.
  • Canoe rentals and guided tours are available from numerous local suppliers. Mitchell's Canoe, Kayak, & Snowshoes (8690 Highway 101) has serviced the Powell Forest Canoe Route since 1990.

Contact the Powell River Visitor Centre (#111-4871 Joyce Ave. at the Crossroads Village Shopping Centre) for more canoeing information.
