Two operators work the waters around Invermere. Top rivers for rafting include the wilderness Kootenay River to the east, the somewhat smaller Toby Creek in the west and the comparatively calm Columbia River that flows right through town. All protective gear is provided - just bring a bathing suit, towel, a dry change of clothing and perhaps a fleece.
Kootenay River Runners
If you've never tried river rafting, a two hour trip down Toby Creek is a great opportunity to get your feet wet, and the rest of you too. The 50km/30mi long full-day trip on the Kootenay River is a mix of class II and III whitewater and easier flat stretches. Children as young as five will enjoy this wilderness river adventure. A riverside lunch and a snack are included. Kootenay River Runners also offers a half-day program on the same river. Both Kootenay River tours start and end in nearby Radium Hot Springs.
The company also offers a unique paddling experience on the Columbia River. The vessel is a modern, but traditionally styled, 10m/34ft long voyageur canoe. Paddle with a crew of up to 18 through the Columbia Wetlands and observe the abundant wildlife of this most important nature reserve.
Columbia Rafting Adventures
This 3 1/2 hour ride down Toby Creek involves class II and III water that's exciting enough to get the adrenaline running. Children are welcome at the discretion of the trip leader, except when the spring runoff is at its peak. Kids are always welcome on the Columbia River scenic float tour. This comfortable 2 1/2 hour journey starts at Fairmont Hot Springs, and provides a great opportunity for wildlife viewing. Getting wet is not part of the program, unless it's raining - which just doesn't happen very often in these parts.
Columbia Rafting Adventures also rents inflatable tandem kayaks for relaxing, self-guided Columbia River tours.
